The Columbus Tustin Magnet & Pre-Pathway to International Baccalaureate Diploma Program offers a unique learning environment. Magnet students spend the majority of their school day as a cohort in Math-Science and Language Arts-Social Science classes. Tucson Unified students in grades Kinder through 6th grade will be tested to determine student eligibility to receive gifted services in the TUSD GATE program. The testing usually happens in the months of September and December and students who qualify will get placement for the following school year. Parents will be notified of GATE qualification by late February for elementary and late March for middle school. GATE testing in TUSD begins with universal screening in the 3rd grade. No form or application for participation in 3rd grade GATE testing is necessary. The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3) assesses cognitive abilities through nonverbal means and is used for initial testing. The NNAT3 is a 30 minute timed test with 48 items. Two of my three children, now grown, were also in TUSD GATE. My younger daughter, Mrs. Amanda Stunes, is also a teacher with the GATE department.

Edison identifies eligible students for the GATE program through testing beginning in third grade. Once identified, students are clustered together within general education classes, and receive differentiated instruction and assignments within the core curriculum for their grade level. For the convenience of families with incoming kindergarten students, TUSD is encouraging parents to proceed with kindergarten registration. Please note that in order to register for Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year, your child’s birthdate must fall between, September 2, 2015 and September 1, 2016. After CDC and TUSD guidelines allow students to return to their schools, the GATE department we will be testing TUSD students K through 6th grade to determine student eligibility to receive gifted services in the TUSD GATE program for school year 2021-22.
